Rare Visit by a Wood Stork in Maryland

Tell Me A Story: Monthly Blog

(September 2021)

I along with my three photographer friends heard about a rare juvenile Wood Stork spotted in Maryland, a nearby state. So Sunday morning we drove almost an hour searching for the new famous visitor to greater DC area.

We were told that the last sightings were a day earlier close to Pier 22, but we were not able to see it. We spoke to couple of photographers who were also searching for it.

While walking down the canal, this was the first bird that we saw.

There was a small waterfall next to the pier. I wish I had my tripod with me for this shot.

It was getting hot and humid, and walking up and down the trail and hoping something magical would happen was all we could think of. We were taking pictures of whatever we could find, and this spider web is just an example.

As two of us were a further down, one of our photographer spotted the bird and called to notify us. We were literally running towards the bird so that we would get a chance to take the picture.

It was hot, tiring but our desire to see the bird and photograph were still strong. When we arrived at the scene, the bird was perched on top of a dead tree. We were all excited.

After taking hundreds of pictures, we were planning to leave, but wanted to see if we could get it in flight. As we were waiting, we saw the hawk try to attack the bird. After a while, it almost attacked it, and it flew away. I was disappointed not to get the bird on flight.

This was the Hawk that scared the Wood Stork away.

This Heron was waiting for the right moment to go down and get some lunch.

After like 5 minutes, the bird returned a little upstream, and it was hardly 12 feet from where we were taking the pictures. At times, I could not fully extend my 200-500 mm lens, for a full body and had to reduce it 400mm or so.

Hope you enjoy the pictures as I enjoyed taking them.
